Dispelling Common HVAC Myths for a More Comfortable Home
Having a complete heating, ventilation and air conditioning system—or HVAC—in your home means a comfortable environment no matter what the time of the year is. And even though we don’t get that much snow in Albuquerque, the temperature can drop low enough that heating can also be an issue at times.
But many people make a lot of assumptions about their HVAC system and how to use it that just aren’t true. We’re here to answer some of the questions you may have about what’s true and what’s not.
Does Maximizing Your Temperature Make Your House Heat/Cool Faster?
The answer to this is categorically, 100%, “NO.” Putting your thermostat to the maximum setting does not make your furnace put out more heat, nor does it make your air conditioner put out colder air.
The amount of time it takes for a home to heat up or cool down is determined entirely by the mathematics of area and temperature.
Do I Need An Expert To Change My Filter?
Much of this depends on your degree of confidence with your system and what kind of system you have. If you don’t have reasonable technical grounding and your filter doesn’t require frequent changing, you may be in a position to change your own filter periodically. You may even want to pair this with a professional maintenance period, like cleaning out the ducts as well.
However, many different factors can affect the rate and quality at which your filter changes. Smoking in the home, having pets, and the frequency with which heating or AC systems are used all have an impact on the filter and when it needs to be changed. If you want to ensure that your filter and your entire HVAC system is properly maintained think about getting a professional to do it.
If There’s Air Conditioning in The House Do I Still Need a Fan?
Air conditioning can cool the air down in a room, but it doesn’t circulate it and move it to the same degree that a fan does. This is why if you have a good fan, or better yet, an integrated fan system, like ceiling fans, you can actually help your air conditioning efficiency by circulating the cold air more aggressively.
When air doesn’t circulate, it actually feels warmer in a room. When air does circulate, it takes less energy for an air conditioner to reach a comfortable temperature in the room. In other words, if you use a fan, you can actually leave your air conditioner on a higher setting and still feel as cool as if it were on a lower setting, helping to you to save on your utility bills.
If It’s Not Broken, Should I Fix It?
The key thing here is that unless you’ve got the technical expertise, you don’t know when something is broken. Just because something appears to be operating, it doesn’t mean that all is well. A professional inspection can clear things up quickly.
