FAQs About Stop-And-Waste Valves

A Common Irrigation Problem

Although it’s buried and easily forgotten about, your irrigation system is actually one of the hardest working components of your home’s plumbing. Irrigation systems are typically more complicated than the handful of sinks, and bathroom plumbing fixtures in your home.

They also handle more volume of freshwater than all the other aspects of your plumbing combined. They do all of this while being subjected to the elements of the hard Santa Fe sun. When taking all of this into account, it’s no wonder that irrigation system problems can be abundant.

Many irrigation system problems can be tied back to one faulty component: the stop-and-waste valve. In this article, you will learn what a stop-and-waste valve is and why it is important to the operation of your irrigation system.

What Is a Sprinkler Stop-And-Waste Valve?

what are waste valvesAn irrigation sprinkler stop-and-waste valve is a design feature that is intended to protect your system from damage, particularly freezing damage. A stop-and-waste valve allows you to turn off the water to your system if you please, while also letting the leftover water in the irrigation lines drain out.

Some models are manual and are actuated only at the beginning and end of a watering season by the homeowner. Other models are automatic and are controlled by the irrigation controller so lines are drained after every irrigation sequence.

Seeing a stop-and-waste valve actuate can be surprising because they allow water to flow from the valve body, leading homeowners to believe they are faulty.

Where Is a Stop-And-Waste Valve Located?

Stop-and-waste valves are located at a low point in your irrigation system. Typically there will be a box somewhere on your property where your property’s freshwater supply hooks into your irrigation lines.

where

The box may contain a few other valves, an irrigation controller, and a backflow preventer. The purpose of putting this valve underground is so that gravity can drain your system through the stop-and-waste valve.

Cost of Not Repairing Stop-And-Waste Valves

sprinkler stop and waste costStop-and-waste valves are not expensive to repair but failure to maintain them in working conditions can be. After a few years, stop-and-waste valves can go bad and allow water to continue to sit in your irrigation lines over winter.

Shallow irrigation lines will almost certainly freeze and crack. Irrigation heads are also susceptible to freezing damage since water can pool in them as well.

Furthermore, homeowners often don’t realize damage has occurred until they turn on their irrigation systems in the spring and full pressure water washes away parts of their landscape.

By checking and replacing your stop-and-waste valve you can prevent all the hassle of having to constantly repair a plumbing emergency.

Common Heating And Cooling Tools And What They’re Used For

What Are Some Tools That HVAC Technicians Use, and Why?

HVAC technicians perform a wide range of jobs and possess a versatile skill set. They need to be trained in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning in order to tackle all HVAC needs. In order to fix any problems that they may come across, HVAC technicians need to have a wide range of tools with them at all times.

There are some tools that are necessary for almost every job. These are tools that many people are familiar with and may have in their own homes, like hammers, screwdrivers, and wrenches. Other tools are more technical and are more likely to only be used by specialized professionals, like multimeters and power drills. This article will be covering the broad range of tools needed to get an HVAC job done right.

Basic HVAC Tools

essential toolsMany tools that HVAC professionals need are tools that most everyone has in their own home. These tools are versatile, like the HVAC field, and they can come in handy in a variety of situations. For example, HVAC technicians will always carry multiple sizes of screwdrivers to be prepared for any size screw.

They will also be sure to have different shaped screwdrivers to be ready for any scenario. Hammers are also important tools for every HVAC technician to carry because they can be used in a variety of situations.

Tape measures and wrenches are also essential tools for these technicians. Pliers are important because they come in different sizes and can help manipulate wires, bolts, and pipes. Flashlights come in handy for poorly-lit projects, and therefore they are also carried by all HVAC technicians.

HVAC Tools For Specialized Jobs

Some jobs that HVAC technicians perform are more specialized and therefore require more technical tools. HVAC technicians regularly deal with electricity and live wires. Therefore, it is important that they carry a multimeter. Multimeters are able to tell a technician if electricity is present and what the voltage is. Because HVAC technicians deal with temperature-dependent systems very often, it is also important that they carry a digital thermometer.

specialized tools

These tools help keep track of the temperature of the system, ensuring consistency and customer satisfaction. Saws also come in handy for technicians, because they need to cut ducts or pipes to the correct size or to gain access to tight areas. HVAC technicians may also carry tools like a coil fin straightener. This tool helps straighten and clean AC condenser coils when they get dirty, clogged, and twisted, which improves heat exchange and airflow in AC units, which is an important aspect of HVAC technician’s jobs.

Safety Tools for HVAC Technicians

safety precautionHVAC technicians need to have safety tools that will protect them from the everyday dangers of their profession. Working with tools, especially power tools, comes with inherent risks. HVAC technicians also work in dusty environments that can get into their eyes or lungs.

It is important for technicians to wear safety glasses when working in dusty environments or when using power tools to protect their eyes. They can also wear face masks if working in an extremely dusty environment.

Wearing heavy, steel-toed work boots help protect their feet from anything that might drop on them – like a hammer or a window AC unit. Sturdy boots also prevent technicians from slipping when working on plumbing jobs. Earplugs are also important to protect their hearing when using loud power tools.

Tips for Getting Your Home Ready for Fall!

Tips For Getting Your Home Ready For Fall!

Summer is full of time spent around the pool, barbecues, and tending to your gardens. But summer is also a time that brings about a lot of debris.

Whether it’s because of naturally occurring pollen and allergens or because of debris caused by all the fun in the sun, there’s plenty of waste that can be left behind.

As fall approaches, it’s important to prepare your home and space for the autumn months by cleaning your summer debris and we’re here to provide you with some great ways to do so.

Have You Replaced Your Air Filters?

airfiltersMost residences have furnaces and most furnaces have replaceable air filters – and the same can be said about your air conditioner. Unfortunately, this simple task is often one that is overlooked by homeowners.

It can also have a major impact on the comfort in your home and your health as well. Once fall approaches you should consider replacing your air filters because they reduce allergens that make their way into the home, such as pollen, dander, dust, bacteria, and mold.

If your air filter hasn’t been replaced regularly, it’s not operating at maximum capacity. But replacing the filter is simple! Check to see which type and model filter your unit uses and then purchase the correct replacement. Most filters either pop or slide out of the unit. Then just put the new one in and your filter has now been replaced and your heating system is ready to tackle the approaching cooler weather.

Try Cleaning With Nontoxic Chemicals

nontoxicchemicalsMany cleaning agents are made with chemicals, and sometimes they can create toxins if you’re not careful, affecting your air quality.

But fortunately, there are many nontoxic cleaning agents that most homeowners can use, creating a safe environment, many of which you probably already carry in your home or kitchen.

White vinegar has long been used as a cleaning agent because of its variety of uses. Mixed with water in a 1 to 2 ratio it can be used to mop floors. In a 1 to 4 ratio with water, it can disinfect a microwave oven, dishwasher, or coffee maker.

Or use it to clean laminate countertops. Baking soda has deodorizing capabilities. Leave an open box in your fridge or freezer to capture unpleasant scents, and then just dispose of the box after a few weeks.

Or sprinkle baking soda on a mattress or carpets and rugs before vacuuming it up to freshen your bedding and rooms. Finally, tea tree oil is great for disinfecting and killing mold. Mix a few drops into a spray bottle and spray the mixture onto moldy areas, like in a bathroom, and then wipe the mold away.

Check For Gas Leaks

checkforgasleaksMost homes use natural gas in one form or another. Whether it’s in appliances like gas fireplaces and kitchen ranges or to heat their homes, when you have gas in your home there’s always the risk of a gas leak.

And gas leaks can be dangerous or even fatal, so it’s important to check for them frequently. If you ever smell the scent of rotten eggs in your residence, you should leave immediately because it may be a gas leak.

Once outside the residence, contact emergency assistance. And if you’re ever worried your range or other appliances may be leaking, contact our pros at Daniels Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning, LLC and we’ll assist you with all your gas leaks and concerns.

When autumn approaches and the weather turns colder, it’s important to clean your summer debris and prepare your home for the changing temperatures. There are many things you can do to keep your home safe and happy in the fall and winter, but if these tasks are something that you don’t want to tackle on your own or have more questions, then work with our pros to enjoy a comfortable fall season.

Plumbing Subscription Programs Can Provide Peace of Mind

Plumbing Subscription Programs Can Provide Peace of Mind

Homeowners are always wondering when the next shoe will drop when it comes to maintaining their homes. It’s one of the unexpected “joys” of homeownership. It can cause real pain when a water heater or some other major plumbing fixture fails without warning.

Plumbing subscription programs are gaining traction with today’s homeowners who are more comfortable budgeting for repairs on a monthly budget.

This article will teach you a little bit about an alternative to the “hope nothing major breaks” method of home maintenance.

Keep More of Your Money, Rent to Own

renttoownAt some point, your water heater or some other major appliance is going to fail. Hopefully, it happens during regular business hours. No matter when it happens, most folks cringe when they think about finding a plumber they can trust to get their house back on its feet.

This is where plumbing maintenance or subscription plans can pay big dividends. These plans are often part of a new “rent to own” style purchase.

You simply pay one set monthly payment and the plumbing company installs a new water heater. A portion of the monthly charge goes towards the price of the water heater and the balance helps pay for ongoing services. These plans typically include an annual inspection and tune-up of the covered appliance.

Also, repairs are usually included as well, while the unit is under the subscription plan. You’ll have peace of mind when it comes to protecting these large investments.

Wouldn’t it be great if these plans also came with some way of protecting the rest of the plumbing in your home? Well, fortunately for you, some plans include additional protection.

Routine Plumbing Maintenance Included!

plumbingmaintenanceSome plumbing plans also include maintenance and whole-home inspections. A qualified professional plumber may visit your home every year to ensure that the whole system is functioning properly.

They typically check for small leaks and make a few adjustments. This can prevent small problems from becoming major expenses and headaches.

If you do need a major repair, customers under a plumbing subscription may receive a discount for the work they need. One of the best reasons to consider these options is to avoid a plumbing emergency from happening.

No Plumbing Emergencies Means You Can Relax

noplumbingemergenciesWhen the pipes, water heater, and water softener are all properly maintained they last longer and fail less often. A system that has a little TLC from a professional plumber is a lot less likely to cause an emergency situation in the middle of the night.

You won’t spend time worrying about the next emergency plumbing repair and probably, more importantly, you won’t have to try to come up with a bunch of cash to pay a large bill.

At Daniels Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning, LLC we understand the concerns and worries of today’s homeowners. That’s why we want you to know about these services. Give us a call today at (505) 898-8860 to learn more.

I Have an Air Conditioner, So Why Is My House So Hot?

Have you ever walked into your home in the summertime to find that it’s just as hot inside as it is outside? You probably had that moment of doubt when you wondered if you’d forgotten to pay your bill. Unfortunately, it’s not always as simple as paying your energy company.

In the business of your kids getting out of school for the summer, or just wanting to enjoy time at the lake or on the patio, you can forget to schedule your yearly Air Conditioning services. If your machine isn’t keeping your house cool enough, or if it’s not cooling your home at all, there are a few things you can try before calling an HVAC technician.

Let’s look at some of the maintenance you can do, as well as times when it’s best to call a professional.

A Dirty Air Conditioner Won’t Cool Your Home

dirtyunitOne of the simplest ways to make your air conditioner run more efficiently is to give it a thorough cleaning. A dirty unit won’t be able to pull in enough air, so it’ll have to work a lot harder and longer, which drives up your energy bill and makes it harder to cool your home.

To help your outdoor unit pull in air, you should clean the fins each spring. They’re a bit delicate, so a shop vac with a bristled brush is a great way to get a lot of dirt and debris out. You can also spray it down with your hose, but don’t use a pressure washer on it.

The fins are much too delicate to stand up to so much force. After you clean the fins, rake out the area around your unit. You need 12 – 24 inches of clear space around your outdoor component so it can draw in the air without sucking up leaves and twigs.

Inside your home, clean out the evaporator drain and refresh the air filter. If your house is still too hot after a thorough cleaning, you should schedule an appointment with an HVAC professional.

Your Refrigerant Might Be Low

lowrefrigerantModern air conditioners cool air by blowing it over coils filled with coolant, then blowing that cooler air through your ducts and throughout your house.

The process is relatively simple, but the coolant is essential to the process. If the airflow from your vents feels powerful, but the air coming out is warm, you could have a coolant leak.

Air conditioners are closed systems, so low refrigerant is a sign that you have a leak. You could go through the entire life of your appliance and never need a recharge if you don’t develop a leak. The coolant doesn’t evaporate, so a recharge is not part of your yearly AC maintenance. However, only a professional HVAC technician can complete this repair for you.

First, your technician will locate and repair the leak. If he/she skips this step, the coolant will leak right back out and your house will be too hot again. After the technician repairs the leak, he/she will refill the refrigerant. Homeowners can’t do this themselves because you have to be EPA certified to purchase and work with refrigerants.

There Could be Mistakes in Your Installation

wronginstallationIt’s important that you find reputable technicians and contractors to install and repair your air conditioning system. If not, you might find that your air conditioner won’t cool your home, even if it’s brand-new.

One common problem with AC installation is that the unit is the wrong size. If it’s too small, it won’t be powerful enough to cool your entire house.

Larger appliances are most costly, but if you don’t utilize their full capacity, it’s a waste of your hard-earned money. The right contractor will help you pick the correct appliance so that it’s just the right size for your home.

Call Us For All Your HVAC Needs

When it’s hot outside and in, you don’t always have the time to track down the problem yourself, so give us a call if your AC isn’t working. We can find the issue and fix it, or help you select and install the right replacement.

Best of all, we can also help you plan out some fo your maintenance needs, so you never have to worry about your system breaking down.

Budget-Friendly Outdoor Activities to Celebrate Summer

Budget-Friendly Outdoor Activities to Celebrate Summer

After what feels like the longest winter in recorded history, we’ve finally made it to spring. But, before we know it, spring will be over (since most of it was spent on winter weather already), and summer will be here. June 21st is the longest day of the year this year, and it marks the beginning of summer.

Have you made plans for how you’ll spend your extra daylight? If you don’t already have an outdoor activity on your list, check out our suggestions here at Daniels Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning, LLC for water games that you can play without breaking the bank.

Bring Your Sprinklers Into the Mix

sprinklerandslideHave you ever walked past a sprinkler in someone’s yard on a hot day and wandered in a little bit to let the edges of the water mist you? We’ve all been there. Sometimes you just need a quick cooldown, and sprinklers are a great option!

Running through the sprinkler is one of the easiest water activities you can set up for your family. When your kids finish playing at the park or riding their bikes up and down the street, turn on the sprinkler and let them cool down.

They’ll have a blast running back and forth, dancing under the water, and racing each other from one side of the spray to the other. Letting your kids play in the sprinkler is essentially a cost-free activity for you because you probably need to water your lawn anyway. You can be penny-wise by sending your kids to cool down in the yard while you’re already running the water.

Water & Cool Down with Hose Fights

hosefightsIf the intense summer heat begins to dampen your solstice celebrations, you might turn on the hose and cool your family or your guests down with a quick squirt. A surefire way to give up on outdoor activities is to get overheated, so don’t be shy about breaking out the hose to keep the celebrations going.

If your kids need to work off some energy, let them “fight” with the hoses. Few sounds compare to the beauty of a child’s laughter, and they’re sure to be full of giggles as they soak each other, the dog, and maybe even you if you’re not careful!

If the yard starts to get too soggy, you could give them squirt guns instead. Having them use barrels of rainwater that you collect is an even better way to manage your water bill. They’ll still be helping to water your lawn, but with free water instead of water from your outdoor taps.

Water Balloons Battles

waterballoonsfightFor just a couple of dollars, you can create an epic family water balloon battle. The set-up is as simple as arming each member of your family with a basket of color-coded balloons.

You want to make sure that little Johnny and little Jane each have their own colors to remove the temptation to steal each other balloons. Come to think of it, you’d better make sure that dad has his own color too!

You can set up various obstacles or home bases where each person keeps their ammunition. The more hiding places that you can create, the more exciting the game will become. Even glum teenagers won’t be able to resist the temptation to stalk mom and dad around the yard and pelt them with water bombs.

When you’ve all run out of energy and ammunition, you can decide whose clothes are the driest, and that person is the winner of the game. Everyone else can work together to clean up the mess while the winner relaxes on the patio.

Your kids will never forget the night that they hit dad square in the back with a balloon or the way that mom dodged dad’s best effort to soak her. They’ll still be bragging about their best shots at Christmas!

Budget-Friendly Fun

For just a few dollars, you can plan simple and fun outdoor activities with the help of your plumbing, for your family to celebrate the start of summer. All of our suggestions help conserve water as well because any droplets that don’t land on your family will land on your lawn, which desperately needs a drink after a hot summer day.

Why You Should Always Listen To Your Mom (It Saves Money!)

Why You Should Always Listen To Your Mom (It Saves Money!)

Mother’s Day is almost here and it’s a good opportunity to think of your mom and how grateful you are for the many years of love, support and advice that she has given you. If you are a mother, you really can appreciate how hard she worked and how difficult a job being a mom can be!

Plus, once you become an adult, you begin to really appreciate some of your mom’s tips and advice – even those that you found annoying as a kid. You also realize that mom knew what she was talking about and that her tips are actually really helpful especially when it comes to taking care of your house and your HVAC system.

Make Sure There’s No Fire

dontdothatMost moms have a non-negotiable rule about fire. While there are many good uses for fire – we’re sure you argued a few as a kid – when it comes to burning things in or near your house, stick with mom’s rule: no fire.

In addition to some of the obvious risks that come from burning things in your home or yard, doing so can release dangerous fumes into the air. This can make the air in and around your home dangerous to breathe and can put a strain on your HVAC system. Rather than risking it, heed mom’s advice this year and don’t burn anything in or near your home!

Do Some Gardening

gardeningIt seems that most moms love gardening, flowers, and plants. There are many good reasons to like these things, especially when it comes to your home’s air quality. Green plants and gardens help to purify the air in and around your home.

This not only makes it safer and healthier for your family to breathe, but it also takes some of the pressure off of your HVAC system and its filter. So, follow in your mom’s footsteps and do some gardening this spring.

Have You Vacuumed?

vacuumfloorThis is a favorite mom question, especially if you grew up in a home with pets. While it wasn’t a favorite question to hear as a child and it’s not a popular chore as an adult, vacuuming is an important way to improve your indoor air quality.

By vacuuming regularly you can help remove allergens and pollutants from your home. This improves your indoor air quality and can have a significant impact on your family’s health, especially if you have family members that have allergies or respiratory problems.

Plus, it takes some of the strain off of your HVAC system and your home’s air filters. We know you don’t like doing it, but mom knew what she was talking about when she made you vacuum that floor. So this Mother’s Day, go hug your mom and thank her for being right about more things than you knew. And then, make sure that you take her advice to help improve your home’s air quality and to keep your HVAC system running smoothly.

How Water Softeners Make Your Dishes Sparkle

How Water Softeners Make Your Dishes Sparkle

Picture this scenario. You’re looking for a plumber. You find two companies online.

Company 1 – Their website has everything about their business, what their rates are, all their accolades, and more. But they don’t give you any information about what you can do to avoid problems.

Company 2 – Their website has all of the information that company one has, but they also have a blog that gives you lots of useful tips on how you can save money and more.

Which company would you contact? It’s obvious that company one is just about making money. They don’t want to help you if they know that they can’t get any money out of you.

Company two is willing to help you even if you never contact them. We are Daniels Heating and Air, LLC, and we believe that it’s important to help our customers and readers. That’s why we’re going to teach you about hard water.

What is Hard Water?

hardwaterHard water is basically water that has collected minerals when it went into the ground.

When you use the water for washing, it leaves deposits on the surfaces and this causes stains.

It’s not dangerous to your health, but it doesn’t look good, either.

Hard Water Problems – Cleaning Stains

Now that you know what hard water is, how do you clean it? below are some solutions for cleaning hard water stains from common surfaces.

Glass – For cleaning glass surfaces, especially glass that is used for eating or drinking, use vinegar or salt water.

cleaningstains

  • Tile – Saturate some paper towels with white vinegar and soak the affected area with it for at least eight hours. Then rinse it with distilled water and gently scrub it. for shower tiles, just shower.
  • Marble – Stains from hard water can be used with a marble cleaning solution and a nice soft towel.
  • Tub – You can use some vinegar or some lemon juice to clean this surface. Leave it to sit 30 minutes. Then use your sponge or microfiber cloth for scrubbing.

A Water Softener – The Long-Term Answer to Hard Water Stains

It can be quite annoying to keep scrubbing the hard water stains off of your surfaces. So the good news is that there’s a long term solution that you can use – a water softener. Below are some of the benefits of buying a water softener.

  • watersoftenerAppliances have longer lives
  • Dishes and glasses look cleaner
  • Clothing looks less dingy
  • Showers feel better
  • You can use less soap, detergent, and shampoo

Remember how we talked about in the beginning about the stains that hard water leaves on surfaces? If you are tired of your surfaces having those stains and you want your dishes to sparkle, buying yourself a home water softener, or a water filtering system is the best idea.

The Joys of Clean Indoor Air Quality

indooraircleaning

The Joys of Clean Indoor Air Quality

Does your quality indoor air “spark joy” for you? This spring, Marie Kondo’s methods of organization, based on keeping possessions that “spark joy,” has become wildly popular.

Perhaps you too have been swept up into a flurry of organizing the house and giving away unwanted items, especially since this craze has perfectly lined up with spring cleaning.

However, if you’re only looking at your physical objects or closets, you’re missing out. When cleaning and decluttering to see what “sparks joy,” you should also see if your air quality and HVAC system are igniting joy and happiness in your life and lungs.

Noticing Your Air Quality

cleanairDuring spring cleaning, you’ll come across many items demanding your time and attention. It’s easy to tell when a toy is broken or a bookshelf is overstuffed and easy to clean or replace these items.

But other things are less noticeable, such as the most important thing in your home: your air. Unless you have health issues or have a significant problem with pollution, most of the time you won’t even really notice the air, because it’s just…there.

But, given how much time is spent indoors, it’s important to take a step back and figure out if you have good or bad air circulating in your home.

Measuring Indoor Air Quality

Do you know if you have high-quality air in your home? While it would be difficult to measure it, there are a few things you can do to see if you have good indoor air quality.

    • qualityThink about the past month. Although most of us may struggle to remember every detail of every day, think back and see if you can recall suffering from more sneezing, coughing, or sinus issues than normal in the past month.

Also, take into account your children and/or spouse and if you’ve noticed any changes in their health. Allergens like dust, mold, and pollen can cause allergies to flare up. It can make severe health issues like asthma worse too.

  • See if anything is amiss with your HVAC system, filters, or air vents. Although a professional is the only person who should be servicing and inspecting your HVAC system, you can look pretty easy to see if your HVAC system is suffering from neglect. The first thing you should check is your air filter. If it’s overdue for a change, it may have a thick film of dust, which means it no longer can filter air well.

If dust is peeking out of vents, coils, wires, and air ducts, or blanketed thickly inside vents, then your air is being filtered poorly and you may have a serious issue on your hands. Sometimes, a sign your HVAC system isn’t working could be something as simple as not hearing the machine at all or air not coming from the vents, both signs your blower might not be running.

Still not sure? A professional can make sure your HVAC system is running smoothly and efficiently!

Getting a Spring Tune-Up Now

tuneupFor peace of mind and to ensure your HVAC system is working year-round, particularly during the hottest and coldest times of the year, you should have your HVAC system professionally serviced twice a year.

In addition, you’ll need to change your filter as often as needed. Now is the best season to make sure your HVAC is in tip-top shape before the hot summer months arrive. Your HVAC system likely has to work its hardest in the winter and summer, so ideally you’d plan to have your system inspected in the spring and fall.

That way, any serious problems should be able to be addressed in time to prevent unpleasant temperatures in your home during the hottest and coldest months of the year. Don’t forget, part of reducing the amount of dust in your home and air also requires dusting high places like shelves, windowsills, and ceiling fans. Don’t forget these places during spring cleaning!

For all your maintenance needs, be sure to call us at (505) 898-8860! One of our experienced technicians will be happy to ensure your HVAC system is properly maintained and running smoothly so that you can enjoy enhanced air quality and clean home that “sparks joy” all spring and summer long.
