Ways to Combat the Spread of the Flu in Your Home
During flu season, it’s hard to avoid potentially sick people at places such as your job and the grocery store. But you should be able to be safe in your own home, as long as you take precautions. Here are five ways to combat the spread of the flu in your home.
Wash Your Hands
The best way to combat the flu and a host of other communicable diseases is to wash your hands as frequently as possible.
Always wash your hands after going to the bathroom and also before eating or preparing food. If you have a person in your home who already is sick, wash your hands after dealing with that person.
Cover Sneezes and Coughs
Flu spreads best through droplets that are expelled from the nose and mouth during coughs and sneezes. These droplets can fly several feet through the air and land on surfaces where they can live for days until finding a new host.
Teaching your children to cover sneezes and coughs by using their sleeves or the crook of their arm rather than their hands can help prevent the spread of these germs all over your home.
Clean and Disinfect Often
During flu season, it’s important to clean and disinfect surfaces more than you usually would. It’s a good idea several times a day to wipe down countertops, door knobs, light switches and other surfaces that people touch often. Use a solution or cleaner that has bleach in it to help kill as many germs as possible.
Segregate Sick People
If someone in your home does come down with the flu, try to segregate that person from everyone else as much as possible. Confine the person to his or her bedroom and have the person use a different bathroom than everyone else. If you can confine the person to one area of the house, such as the basement, that is even better.
Keep Visitors to a Minimum
During flu season, it’s important to limit your contact with people. Try to avoid having people over to your home or having your kids host sleepovers or playdates. If you have a relative or friend who is sick, ask that person not to visit until he or she is better.
